The City of Flagstaff, becoming a town in 1894, incorporated as a city in 1928, and currently comprising of just over 64 square miles, is nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks and surrounded by one of the largest pine forests on earth. At 7,000 feet, Flagstaff is also one of the highest elevation cities in the United States. Northern Arizona’s San Francisco Volcanic Field, much of which lies within Coconino and Kaibab National Forests, is an area of young volcanoes along the southern margin of the Colorado Plateau. During its 6-million-year history, this field has produced more than 600 volcanoes. The most prominent landmark is San Francisco Mountain, a stratovolcano that serves as a scenic backdrop to the city of Flagstaff. The Lowell Observatory is located in Flagstaff, Arizona at an elevation of 7,260 feet. Best known for the discovery of Pluto, Lowell Observatory is also where scientists gathered the first evidence of the expanding universe. Today the Observatory's astronomers carry out forefront research in all areas of astronomy. The Arizona Snowbowl offers you the unique experience of skiing in the state of Arizona. You'll find the popular Arizona Snowbowl on the San Fransisco Peaks, an extinct volcano that was formed more than 3 million years ago. Flagstaff residents started skiing the volcano back in 1938. Snowbowl is located in the highest mountains of Arizona with a summit of 12,633 feet. |
