THE FAMILY HISTORY INTERVIEW

How many times have you heard people say, “if only we had recorded granddad’s stories?” When we record our personal story and the stories of ancestors, subsequent generations are able to share in the memories of those who have gone before… Old family photographs come alive with a greater depth of meaning when family receives a recorded gift of their heritage.

Recently, I completed a Life Story Interview with a woman who is now in her mid-eighties. As I was leaving her grandson took me aside and expressed the following sentiment:

“I hope Grandmother will be with us for many years to come. I want my children to get to know her. Having grandmother’s story recorded brings a sense of comfort: knowing my children will get to experience her great sense of humor and the graceful way she has lived through the sorrows and joys of her life. Perhaps they will be able to understand why she means so much to me and why she has been such an influential person in my life.”

A friend of mine recently said: “I wish my parents had been interviewed. As I get older and more reflective, I have many questions about my parents that will forever be unanswered.”
